Out of control: Feds ready to seize more guitars at concerts

"The US’s fourth branch of government, the bureaucracy, is at it again. For some reason, the US Fish and Wildlife Service sees it necessary to use American taxpayer dollars to focus on a tariff law violation concerning wood. They are so determined to eradicate illegal wood that they are even considering threatening this year’s summer concerts. Among some of the notable names of rock stars that might be affected: Sheryl Crow, Van Halen, and especially Ted Nugent are on the roster.

The target is the world renowned Gibson Guitars; the ones that the titans of rock will be playing this summer. Of course, this isn’t the first time that the Feds have come to blows with this delinquent guitar manufacturer. On August 25th, 2011 the US Fish and Wildlife Service raided the Memphis and Nashville Gibson factories with astonishing force and guns drawn: as if they were expecting return fire.

This year, the Feds must really be itching for a fight. Apparently, they intend to play ball on the away field, and raid 2012 summer concerts. Of course, their track record suggests that guns will be drawn for these raids too. These reports have many Americans dumbfounded that this could even be happening in the country where rock was invented."

More:
http://www.ijreview.com/2012/05/5881-ou ... -concerts/

My Princeton Reverb with an old 12" Celestion. After 30 years I´ve finally discovered how nice it is to be able to carry everything in one go. An old Rat or my Fulldrive2, maybe a delay in the guitarcase, and I can cover almost everything.
But I´m looking for a Deluxe Reverb. With 6L6´s in it might give me the clarity I miss with the Princeton. It´s too throaty. Also my Princeton is an ´81 (?) and has a cab made out of particleboard. I put it in a repro cab made out of pine, and the difference was stunning... It just never ends...

If you can trace out the circuit of the power amp you have, we can figure it out.

If it's a non-driver-transformer solid state amp, then the use of one diode for output bias is not a big issue. Most direct coupled push/pull amps work with a wire subbed in for bias diodes. They just produce more crossover distortion, which can be fixed once you get the rest of it running.

One of the biggest issues is whether it has a small driver transformer or not.

This has been a great discussion of these amps, and I really appreciate everyones' contributions. It's really difficult to talk about impressions of amp tone and character, and these posts have managed to do it a meaningful way nevertheless.

It's really intriguing to get reads like this from folks with experience with lots of these amps. When I first got the brown bug, I tracked down a '62 Super. A beautiful little amp it was. I loved the tone, but it didn't 'feel' right under my fingers somehow. I can't really explain it: just didn't seem to 'give' where and when I wanted, as quirky as that sounds. It was easy enough to sell--dead straight save the filter caps and super clean. I never did figure out why I couldn't connect.

A couple years later, I talked my buddy and amp tech into dragging some of the ones he had into the shop. He brought: Vibrosonic; a couple Pro's; Deluxe and a Vibrolux. I took each one home and played them for a couple days. Here's where I came out:

Vibrosonic: hugely disappointing for what I was after. Clean, blunt, and kind of lifeless. Tone was wonderful, but didn't grind. I thought it would make a great jazz amp, but that's not what I had in mind for it. Too clean, I guess, and kind of hard. Maybe the rectifier and giant iron?

Deluxe: superb little amp--captures to my ear what may be the essence of the line. The little thing had enormous character and complexity for such a small package. I passed because I was after something bigger.

Pro: Really liked this, SS rectifier notwithstanding (got a strong preference for tube rectifiers). I came very close to pulling the trigger on this one. Doubtless, some of it had to do with the 15: I'm a really big fan of 15's, especially with single coils. I came close to choosing this one.

Vibrolux: this one nailed me. Had a lot of what I loved about the Deluxe but with a lot more power and headroom. I liked the idea of a smallish box with medium-size amp capabilities, or something very near it.

Could only get one, so I picked the Vibrolux. It was stock except for filter caps and one tube socket. However, no speaker. My buddy had installed a mid-60's Oxford that was pretty much correct, and I played it like that for a brief period. Thereafter, I popped in a JBL D120F from '62: the thing turned into an absolute beast. It took the amp to legitimate medium venue capacity. Given the size of the box, it wasn't quite to the level of the journeyman 40 watters like my BFSR or BFPR, but it was perilously close.

IMHO, it's too bad Fender abandoned that amp. I guess the BFVR filled that void, but I got a real nice '64, as I recall, maybe a '65, later and, on AB'ing it with the brown Vibrolux, the brown won hands down. The BF (pictured below) was a dandy--super, super clean, and I traded it and ponied up a little cash besides to my tech for my '56 Pro.

Fact is, except for the Vibrosonic, I'm a real brownie fan. The Pro my guy had is still there, and, lately, I've been thinking about going up after it--that's why the post. The discourse in response has been really interesting and helpful.

I was not sure how good the transformers were in these?

I would need to buy a pine 1x12 combo cab (tweed or black tolex) the chassis and plates and some transformers and the Fender specific parts, mainly to make it look up to scratch. I plan on using a spare Alnico gold I have (although have a range of ceramic Celestions of H/M etc from 67 to 81 to choose from if better suited).

The BFDR sounds as if might suit my needs best (see the grab and go thread!) to pair with one of my Marshalls with an ABY switch?

I would go for the Mojo/TAD SFDR. If Fender Cleans are what you miss, then it must be a BF circuit, and that kit seems to be the best bet, and then maybe substitute parts. Or find a way to import one of these: http://www.allenamps.com/accomplice.php
